Hopefully cities and towns with their own dog laws will follow suit with the state.
Ohio Governor signs HB 14 into law to end BSL
Until today, all pit bulls in Ohio were undeservedly labeled vicious, but this bill has removed that label for this breed on a state level. Now they will only be deemed "vicious" or "dangerous" based on their behavior, not breed.
The counties, cities, and towns that do not have dog laws and regulate according to state laws will change along with the state and follow HB 14. However, cities and towns that have their own dog laws will not be required to change their current laws.
The governor's signing of HB 14 today will not end BSL in the state of Ohio, but it is a positive step in the right direction since it now allows these municipalities to follow suit and also make a change to end BSL.
Kudos to Governor Kasich for signing this bill that allows this breed to be judged by behavior and not unfair labeling without just cause. Thank you to everyone involved in making this happen.
YEAH!!!! Our mom has a friend who was involved in this as well.....we are VERY excited! Paws crossed cities and towns realize that BSL is WRONG!
ReplyDeleteIt's been a long time coming. I've never had a pitbull but when I worked as a vet assistant a number of years ago one of my co-workers had 3 of them and they were the sweetest most loving dogs. Any preconceived notions I had about pitbulls changed the day I met those dogs.
ReplyDeleteNext up here in Ohio is Nitro's Law. Ohio is one of the worst states when it comes to lax animal abuse and cruelty laws. Nitro's Law will strengthen abd enforce stronger penalties on those convicted of animal cruelty and abuse. We're keeping our paws crossed on this one.
